矢島 由佳(大阪大学):The Cultural Transmission of Japanese Ornamental Knots: Women’s Roles from the Meiji Period to the Present

講演要旨
Hanamusubi are ornamental knots made of originally silk thread shaped like a flower or tiny insect placed on a small bag, and historical documents suggest that they were typically used in tea and incense practices during the Edo period (1603-1868). While today the employment of hanamusubi in incense practices remains, the use of hanamusbi in tea practices has eventually faded out. In addition, since the late Edo period hanamusubi has been incorporated in the fashion of women in Japan, particularly as a sort of button for kimono coats. While scholars of Japanese art and design have studied tea and incense utensils, hanamusubi remains thoroughly unexamined. In the course of the cultural transmission of hanamusubi, women played a significant role in particular after the Meiji period (1868-1912). From the Meiji period to the 1970s, the late Shōwa period (1926-1989), hanamusubi was taught towards women as a part of sewing education, and later since the1980s, hanamusubi shifted to be taught towards women as a hobby at cultural schools for adult education. Intriguingly, a part of trajectory of the dissemination of hanamusubi practices shares that of tea practices, that will also be considered in this study. The investigation of hanamusubi allows us to understand one of the roles of women in the reproduction of cultural practices, whereas this is often hidden in mainstream histories or historical records. Therefore, this presentation explores the ways in which women played a role in transmitting the practice of hanamusubi and cultivating its subsequent values.
