Can DNA Sense Light and Magnetic Fields? — Proposing a New Photomagnetic Sensing Mechanism in Living Organisms!

Researchers at WPI-SKCM² have proposed a new biological mechanism suggesting that DNA may respond to both light and weak magnetic fields. The study found that when blue light interacts with DNA and natural flavin molecules in living systems, it can create long-lived radical pairs whose reactions are influenced by magnetic fields. This discovery may help explain how some animals sense Earth’s magnetic field for navigation, and could also deepen understanding of the effects of light and magnetic fields on human health, aging, and DNA damage repair.
