With statistical physics methods and computer simulations, Marjolein Dijkstra studies colloidal model systems. She revealed the role of particle shape and particle interactions on colloidal self- assembly and determined crystal structures and phase behavior of shape-anisotropic particles. Furthermore, Dijkstra predicted the existence of entropy-driven chiral nematic phases, leading to the experimental discovery of a long-sought-for splay-bend nematic phase of colloidal bent rods.
