Catch a Glimpse of the New SKCM² Research Facility In Progress at Hiroshima University
WPI-SKCM² will have a new home designed to stimulate and enable fusion research under one roof.
Just beyond the main gate of Hiroshima University, a new building is under construction that will house the International Institute for Sustainability with Knotted Chiral Meta Matter (WPI-SKCM²).
This world-class facility is funded in part by Japan’s World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) with the primary mission being to generate world-class interdisciplinary science.
The new six-story building will feature open-concept laboratories, with shared facilities, including state-of-the-art clean rooms, microscopy labs, and more, making it possible for researchers to work side-by-side with seamless access to shared equipment. Collaboration is central to the design, with dedicated meeting lounges and open work spaces.
“The building has been carefully planned with fusion research being the very top priority.”
— Professor Ivan Smalyukh, Director of WPI-SKCM²
As the WPI program also emphasizes connecting science to the greater society, the ground floor will host a public outreach gallery, where visitors can watch science in action and engage with ongoing research.
Construction is currently underway and the formal opening is expected for spring 2026.
