Registration for the 2025 BEaRS Summer Workshop is now open!

The International Institute for Sustainability with Knotted Chiral Meta Matter (WPI-SKCM²), Hiroshima University, is proud to announce its collaboration with the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for the upcoming Boulder Energy and Resilient Sustainability (BEaRS) Summer Workshop, scheduled to take place from July 16–19, 2025 in Boulder, Colorado, USA and online.

This interdisciplinary workshop aims to unite graduate students, early-career researchers, and leading academics across diverse fields of energy and sustainability. By bridging the physical sciences, engineering, social sciences, economics, and policy, the BEaRS Summer Workshop encourages innovative thinking and cross-disciplinary collaboration in addressing the world’s most pressing energy challenges.

This year’s themes reflect the rapidly evolving landscape of sustainability and energy systems, including:

  • Economics of renewable integration
  • Electrification and electric vehicles
  • Renewable energy policy and regulatory design
  • Critical minerals and the energy transition
  • Energy impacts of AI hardware and datacenters
  • New approaches to energy-efficient, unconventional computing
  • Applications of chiral materials in energy-efficient information storage
  • Sustainable materials for the built environment and thermal control of buildings

Participants will engage in keynote lectures, contributed talks, poster sessions, and panel discussions, while also having the chance to explore Boulder’s vibrant culture and the scenic Rocky Mountains.

Confirmed speakers include distinguished figures in the field:

  • Dr. Prof. Katsuya Inoue, Hiroshima University
  • Dr. Hiroshi Sato, Hiroshima University & RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science
  • Dr. Ian Lange, Colorado School of Mines
