WPI-SKCM² and Tohoku University Co-Host International Workshop on Entangled Structures and Sustainable Metamaterials
WPI-SKCM² is pleased to announce its collaboration with Tohoku University’s Advanced Institute for Materials Research (WPI-AIMR) and the Tohoku Forum for Creativity in organizing the event titled “The Theory of Periodic Tangles and Their Interdisciplinary Applications.” This event will take place from July 25 to August 1, 2025, at the House of Creativity, Tohoku University.
The program aims to explore the mathematical characterization of entanglement and its potential applications across various disciplines, including textiles, medical devices, polymers, molecular chemistry, and construction materials. By bringing together scientists, engineers, and artists, the workshop seeks to foster innovative solutions and sustainable designs through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Key events include:
- Public Lecture on the Topology of Entangled Structures (July 25, 2025)
- WPI–AIMR & WPI–SKCM² International & Interdisciplinary Math–Materials Workshop (July 28–31, 2025)
- INTERWOVEN Symposium: Towards a Universal Topological Model of Entangled Structures for Sustainable Metamaterials (August 1, 2025)
The workshop is co-organized by a group including WPI-SKCM² PI Sabetta Matsumoto and Affiliate Member Sonia Mahmoudi, and features a diverse lineup of invited speakers from institutions worldwide, including many WPI-SKCM² members, including PI Jorn Dunkel (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Affiliate Member Louis Kauffman (University of Illinois at Chicago), PI Yuka Kotorii (Hiroshima University), Affiliate Member Eleni Panagiotou (Arizona State University) and Affiliate Member Koya Shimokawa (Ochanomizu University), among others.
Participants will engage in scientific exchanges, exhibitions, hands-on workshops, and networking opportunities, all aimed at promoting cultural impact and interdisciplinary research.
This collaborative effort underscores WPI-SKCM²’s commitment to advancing research in knotted chiral meta matter and addressing global challenges through innovative, cross-disciplinary approaches.
