Ken’ichi Yoshida (HU) Hyperbolic geometry on the exteriors of knots and links

Hybrid, VBL 204 & Zoom

One way to investigate knots and links is to consider their exteriors, which are 3-manifolds. Due to celebrated works by William Thurston, it is known that hyperbolic geometry is really useful in the study of 3-manifolds. In fact, surprisingly many knots and links are hyperbolic. Conversely, the exteriors of knots and links give significant examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. In this presentation, I will explain hyperbolic geometry from basic ideas, and discuss notions such as the volume and deformation.
