Pierre Delplace (École Normale Supérieure de Lyon): Wave topology, from condensed matter to geo-astrophysical fluids

Zoom

Topology manifests in various ways in physics. Its contribution to condensed matter physics has been remarkably fruitful for several decades, enabling the discovery of new effects and phases of matter, such as topological insulators. Moreover, some of these successes have since influenced numerous other areas of physics, particularly classical wave physics as a whole, from acoustics to optics. In this presentation, I will explain how the concepts of topological bands and edge states have found novel applications in the dynamics of atmospheric, oceanic, and stellar fluids.
