Call for Registration: Mathematics & Physics of Entangled Metamaterials (GTF 2025) by WPI-AIMR

We are pleased to announce the upcoming interdisciplinary workshop “Mathematics & Physics of Entangled Metamaterials” (GTF 2025), organized by WPI-AIMR as part of the Junior Research Program: The Theory of Periodic Tangles and Their Interdisciplinary Applications, supported by the Tohoku Forum for Creativity.  This workshop aligns with WPI-SKCM²  fusion research project “Textiles and Skins,” and is organized by WPI-SKCM² Affiliate Member Sonia Mahmoudi with PI Katsuya Inoue as an invited speaker.

Overview

·         Dates: Monday–Thursday, October 6–9, 2025

·         Venue: Tokyo Electron House of Creativity (3F, Lecture Theater), Katahira Campus, Tohoku University, WPI-AIMR

This workshop will bring together researchers from mathematics, physics, chemistry, and materials science to explore how multiscale entangled structures—such as those found in polymers and textiles—can be modeled and understood through mathematical and physical frameworks. Combining theoretical discussions with practical applications, the program aims to shed light on the mechanical behavior of these complex systems across a wide range of contexts.

Event Speakers

A distinguished roster of invited speakers has been confirmed, representing institutions worldwide:

·         Tim Chen – University of Houston

·         Mike Dimitriyev – Texas A&M University

·         Tatsuki Hayama – Keio University

·         Katsuya Inoue – Hiroshima University/ WPI-SKCM²

·         Sofia Lambropoulou – National Technical University of Athens

·         Yasumasa Nishiura – Tohoku University

·         Vanessa Sanchez – Rice University

Program Highlights

The schedule will feature invited talks, interspersed with networking coffee breaks, and will include a reception party on one of the evenings.

On the final day, participants will also have the opportunity to join an excursion to Shiogama and Matsushima (prior registration required). Transportation details and guidelines will be provided at the venue.

Why This Workshop Matters

By bringing together experts across disciplines, GTF 2025 seeks to advance our understanding of entangled metamaterials—from first principles to practical applications. With its focus on cross-disciplinary dialogue, theoretical depth, and real-world impact, the workshop will be a pivotal gathering for both emerging and established researchers.
