WPI-PI Shang-Te Danny Hsu Awarded 2024 Franco-Taiwanese Grand Scientific Prize by National Science and Technology Council of Taiwan and the French Academy of Sciences
Congratulations to WPI-SKCM2 Principal Investigator, Shang-Te Danny Hsu and his research collaborator, Cyril Hanus, Research Fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry and Neuroscience in Paris, for receiving the prestigious 2024 Franco-Taiwanese Grand Scientific Prize. This recognition celebrates the Franco-Taiwanese scientific duo for their contributions in a field of mutual interest to both countries. The award ceremony will take place on November 26, 2024, under the Dome of the Institut de France.
In early 2022, Hsu and Hanus collaborated on a project focused on modeling glycoprotein structures. Leveraging advanced techniques like cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAX), and high-speed atomic force microscopy, they developed GlycoSHIELD, a computational method for creating atomistic models of glycosylated protein structures. Their collaborative efforts provided significant insights into the glycan components of proteins associated with neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, and contributed to structural analyses of the SARS-CoV Spike protein, supporting the design of targeted antibodies and vaccines.
